This course aims at introducing the students to the area of Nuclear Power plants (NPP). First, the students will be introduced to the different classifications of the NPP. To appreciate the needed thermodynamic performance of a NPP, the thermodynamics of thermal power stations are reviewed. The historical development of the different types of NPP is reviewed to realize why certain types of NPP are dominant. This will also help in understanding the origin of some of the proposed advanced NPP. The different components and systems of the current generation of NPP are thoroughly introduced. After reviewing the impact of the major nuclear accidents on the development of reactor generations, the GEN IV of the nuclear reactors as well as the Small & Medium Reactors (SMR) will then be introduced.
Throughout the course, stress will be on the engineering aspects of NPP (not just the basic ideas). Schematics and multimedia will be used extensively and extra literature will be provided
